Swedish Porsche Brochures 1950s–1970s | 356, 911 & Scania-Vabis

A collection and documentation of original Swedish Porsche sales literature, including rare Porsche 356, 911 and 912 brochures distributed by Scania-Vabis in Sweden.

Sweden has a surprisingly important place in early Porsche history. In 1950, Scania-Vabis became the official Swedish Porsche importer, having already secured the Swedish Volkswagen agency in 1948. The first Porsche arrived on 11 May 1950 – a hand-built aluminium-bodied 356/2 Coupé from Gmünd – making Sweden one of Porsche’s very first export markets. Several more of the exceptionally rare Gmünd-built cars followed during the same year.

Scania-Vabis produced its own Swedish sales literature for Porsche, and some of these publications differ considerably from the better-known German factory brochures. They were not always simple translations: several feature unique Swedish layouts, typography, illustrations and technical content.

This page documents the early Swedish Porsche brochures I have been able to identify, primarily from the 1950s and 1960s. Wherever possible, different editions, printing dates, printer’s codes and other identifying details are recorded. As surviving examples are scarce and little information about these publications has previously been compiled, this should be considered a work in progress.

1953 – Porsche 356 Swedish Sales Brochure

One of the earliest known Swedish-market Porsche 356 brochures, produced for AB Scania-Vabis, Porsche’s Swedish general agent. Rather than simply translating a German factory publication, the brochure appears to have been designed and produced specifically for the Swedish market.

The brochure promotes both Porsche’s competition success and its qualities as a fast and economical long-distance touring car. Technical specifications are provided for the 1.1, 1.3 and 1.5 litre models and the 1500 Super.

A particularly distinctive feature of the 1953 edition is the use of the brochure’s blue spot colour over parts of the main car illustration, giving it an unusual, almost hand-coloured appearance.

1956 – Porsche 356 A, Carrera, Speedster & 550 Spyder

A large fold-out Swedish sales brochure issued by AB Scania-Vabis in March 1956, shortly after the introduction of the Porsche 356 A.

Designed specifically for the Swedish market, the brochure uses a distinctive black, grey and bright yellow graphic treatment and the Swedish slogan “Porsche – den kräsne bilistens önskevagn” (“Porsche – the discerning motorist’s dream car”).

Separate sections present the Coupé (described as Limousine), Cabriolet, Speedster, Carrera and competition Spyder. Particularly interesting are the sections devoted to the 1500 GS Carrera and 550/1500 RS Spyder, linking the road cars directly to Porsche’s successes in the Carrera Panamericana, Mille Miglia, Le Mans and Liège–Rome–Liège.

The reverse contains detailed specifications for six versions, ranging from the 44 hp 356 A/1300 to the 110 hp 550/1500 RS Spyder. The Speedster is separately described as available with the 1600, 1600 S or 1500 GS Carrera engine.

The printer’s line “56-451 25.000 3 56 zetape” identifies the production reference, a substantial print run of 25,000 copies, and a printing date of March 1956.

1961 Porsche 356 B – Swedish Prestige Brochure
W 196

An attractive Swedish-language Porsche 356 B prestige brochure from 1961, factory-printed in Germany under publication number W 196.

The brochure belongs to Porsche’s early 1960s promotional literature for the 356 B and uses sophisticated lifestyle photography rather than relying solely on technical presentation. Its striking cover shows a red Porsche 356 B photographed beside a large passenger aircraft, reflecting the international, affluent image Porsche was cultivating during this period.

Period photography inside includes comparative views of Porsche 356 models, while the rear carries the distinctive Porsche logotype together with the publication code W 196 and Printed in Germany.

A particularly interesting example for Scandinavian collectors, combining Porsche’s German factory production with Swedish-language sales material from the early Scania-Vabis era.

1963 Porsche 901 – Swedish W 221 Sales Brochure

Rare Swedish-language sales brochure for the Porsche 901, the original designation of the car that shortly afterwards became the Porsche 911.

This is the Swedish-market edition of Porsche’s original W 221 brochure for the new 901, issued in 1963. The 901 designation was subsequently changed to 911, making surviving pre-name-change literature an important document of the model’s introduction.

Introduced as the Type 901 at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1963, Porsche’s successor to the 356 entered series production in September 1964. Only weeks later, following an objection from Peugeot concerning three-digit model numbers with a zero in the middle, Porsche changed the model designation from 901 to 911.

This Swedish-language W 221 brochure belongs to the very first series of sales literature produced for the Porsche 901. The German W 221 is documented from August 1963, immediately before the new model was presented at the Frankfurt International Motor Show in September. Swedish text was produced for the local market while the brochure itself was printed in Germany.

The 901 designation makes the brochure particularly significant. Porsche’s new model would retain this name until 1964, when an objection from Peugeot resulted in the now-famous change from 901 to 911.

The brochure describes the 1991 cc air-cooled six-cylinder boxer engine producing 130 DIN hp at 6,200 rpm, five-speed fully synchronized transmission, four-wheel disc brakes and a maximum speed of approximately 210 km/h.

Printed in Germany and produced specifically for the Swedish market, it is an unusual surviving piece of documentation from the very beginning of what would become the Porsche 911.

Historical significance: The Porsche 901 designation was extremely short-lived. Series production began in September 1964, but after Peugeot objected to Porsche’s use of a three-digit model number with a zero in the middle, Ferry Porsche ordered the model to be renamed 911 on 22 October 1964. Sales literature carrying the 901 name had already been printed, making surviving 901 brochures important documents from the birth of the Porsche 911.

This Swedish edition presents the 1,991 cc six-cylinder Porsche 911 with 130 DIN hp and a stated maximum speed of 210 km/h. This surviving example carries the dealer stamp of Ernst Björstig AB, representing Porsche in Lidköping, Skara and Vara.

1965 Porsche 911 – Swedish W 288 Sales Brochure

Swedish-market Porsche 911 sales brochure, printed in Germany in April 1965.

Issued during the first full year of 911 production, this early Swedish brochure presents Porsche’s new six-cylinder sports car through large colour photography, Swedish promotional text and detailed technical specifications.

The brochure carries factory publication number W 288 and is dated 4.65. It identifies AB Scania-Vabis of Södertälje as the Swedish general agent for Porsche.

The specifications describe the early 1,991 cc flat-six 911 producing 130 DIN hp at 6,100 rpm, with a five-speed gearbox and a stated maximum speed of 210 km/h. The Swedish text promotes the 911 as both an exclusive sporting coupé and an ideal long-distance car, emphasising performance, safety, elegance and comfort.

This brochure is interesting alongside other Swedish Porsche literature from 1965, showing that several distinct publications for the newly renamed 911 were distributed in Sweden at essentially the same time.

1965 Porsche 911 – Prestige Sales Brochure

Early Porsche 911 prestige brochure from October 1965, featuring one of the most distinctive designs used for the new 911.

The minimalist white cover presents an orange Porsche 911 in full side profile, framed by thin black lines and accompanied by a large outlined “911” graphic. The restrained presentation differs considerably from Porsche’s more conventional technical sales literature of the same period and reflects the increasingly sophisticated marketing surrounding the new 911.

Published in October 1965, during the 911’s first full year of production, this brochure belongs to the earliest generation of literature produced after Porsche’s new sports car had become established under the 911 name.

Today this particular publication is often referred to by collectors as the “Prestige White 911 Brochure” and is considerably less commonly encountered than many of the standard 911 sales brochures from the period

Porsche 911 – Swedish Scania-Vabis Sales Sheet, c. 1965

A rare Swedish sales sheet for the newly introduced Porsche 911, distributed by AB Scania-Vabis in Södertälje. The single-page publication presents the original 2.0-litre 911 with its 130 hp six-cylinder boxer engine, five-speed transmission and a claimed top speed of approximately 210 km/h.

Unlike Porsche’s more elaborate international sales brochures of the period, this appears to have been produced specifically for the Swedish market, with Swedish technical specifications and prominent Scania-Vabis branding. No Porsche publication number or printing date is visible on the sheet.

The specifications correspond to the earliest production version of the Porsche 911, introduced in 1964 and sold during 1965 with 130 hp DIN. The exact publication date remains unconfirmed, but circa 1965 is consistent with both the model specification and the period in which Scania-Vabis marketed Porsche in Sweden.

1966 Porsche 911 & 912 – “5 Well-Known Porsche Enthusiasts” Swedish Scania-Vabis Brochure

An unusual Swedish Porsche promotional brochure issued by Scania-Vabis in 1966, combining owner testimonials, contemporary press reviews and promotion of the improved 1966 Porsche 911 and 912.

Rather than concentrating primarily on technical specifications, the brochure builds its case around five well-known Swedish Porsche owners, pictured together inside a Porsche 911 and individually alongside their cars. Each explains his reasons for choosing Porsche, giving the publication an unusually personal character compared with Porsche’s standard international sales literature.

The reverse section adds contemporary assessments of Porsche from Swedish and international motoring publications and introduces the improved 1966 Porsche 911 and 912.

The brochure was produced during Scania-Vabis’ 75th anniversary year and prominently incorporates the company’s distinctive 1891–1966 golden horn anniversary emblem. Scania-Vabis served as Porsche’s Swedish general importer during this period.

Particularly interesting is the original purpose-designed mailing envelope, which reproduces the Porsche profile illustration and Scania-Vabis anniversary branding. When opened, the faces of the five Porsche owners appear inside the car’s windows – an inventive continuation of the brochure’s central advertising concept.

This appears to be a specifically Swedish Scania-Vabis Porsche campaign rather than a translated version of standard German factory literature.

c. 1965 – Porsche 912 – Swedish Prestige Brochure

A Swedish-language prestige sales brochure for the newly introduced Porsche 912, dating from 1965. The unusually restrained white cover features only a blind-embossed Porsche 912 motif, while the interior contains extensive colour photography, Swedish promotional text, equipment information and full technical specifications.

The brochure appears to be the 912 counterpart to Porsche’s celebrated white 911 prestige brochure from the same period.

Unlike the smaller specification folders issued for the 912 during the same period, this is a substantial prestige-style brochure. The otherwise plain white cover carries only a blind-embossed PORSCHE 912 design, giving the publication a particularly restrained and elegant appearance.

Inside, large colour photographs present the car, interior and mechanical details, accompanied by Swedish promotional text. Separate sections cover the 912’s standard equipment and detailed technical specifications, including its 1,582 cc air-cooled four-cylinder boxer engine producing 90 DIN hp.

No printing date or publication number has yet been identified in this example. Based on its specifications and period context, it appears to date from approximately 1965–1966, during the first years of Porsche 912 production.

This copy retains a period business card from Fors Bilaktiebolag in Växjö, a Swedish Volkswagen and Scania-Vabis dealer, providing an interesting connection to the car’s contemporary Swedish sales network.

1966 Porsche 911 & 912 – Swedish Scania-Vabis Sales Sheet

A Swedish single-sheet sales brochure for the Porsche 911 and 912, issued by AB Scania-Vabis during its 75th anniversary year in 1966.

The landscape-format brochure combines technical specifications for the Porsche 911 and 912 with a large black-and-white photograph of a Porsche 911, registration B 70121. The same promotional photograph was subsequently used on another Swedish Scania-Vabis Porsche sales sheet that also included the newly introduced 911 S.

Distinctively Swedish details include the Scania-Vabis 75th anniversary emblem, Porsche crest and the invitation “Provkör Porsche hos närmaste VW-återförsäljare” (“Test drive a Porsche at your nearest VW dealer”), reflecting Porsche’s contemporary Swedish distribution through the Volkswagen/Scania-Vabis dealer network.

The absence of the 911 S, combined with the explicit Scania-Vabis 1891–1966 anniversary branding, suggests that this sheet predates the closely related 911/911 S/912 version issued later in 1966.

1966 Porsche 911, 911 S & 912 – Swedish Scania-Vabis Sales Sheet

A Swedish single-sheet Porsche sales brochure issued by general agent AB Scania-Vabis in Södertälje, presenting the Porsche 911, newly introduced 911 S and 912.

The upper half features a large black-and-white photograph of a Porsche 911 outside a hotel, while the lower section provides concise Swedish technical specifications for all three models. Particularly significant is the inclusion of the original 160 DIN hp Porsche 911 S, placing the publication in the period following the model’s introduction in 1966.

The sheet appears to have been produced specifically for the Swedish market by Scania-Vabis rather than simply being a translated German factory brochure. Its typography, Swedish-market specifications and prominent Scania-Vabis identification make it an interesting piece of early Porsche distribution history in Sweden.

1967 Porsche Coupé & Targa – Swedish 911 T / 912 Sales Sheet

A Swedish single-sheet Porsche sales brochure promoting the Coupé and Targa body styles and featuring the Porsche 912 and newly introduced Porsche 911 T.

The brochure reuses the distinctive Swedish promotional photograph of Porsche 911 registration B 70121, previously used in Scania-Vabis Porsche advertising from 1966. Here, however, the presentation has evolved to promote Porsche’s expanded range of body styles, prominently headed “Porsche coupé / targa.”

Swedish introductory text describes three available configurations: closed Coupé, Coupé with sunroof and the open Targa model. Technical specifications are provided for the 90 DIN hp Porsche 912 and the 110 DIN hp Porsche 911 T.

The inclusion of the 911 T identifies this as a later publication than the related 1966 Scania-Vabis sales sheets using the same photograph, and places it around 1967, when the 911 T was introduced for the 1968 model year.

1971 Porsche 911 & VW-Porsche 914 – Swedish Double-Sided Specification Sheet

An unusual Swedish-market double-sided Porsche specification sheet from 1971, covering the complete Porsche 911 and VW-Porsche 914 ranges.

One side presents the Porsche 911 Coupé/Targa range, with separate technical specifications for the 911 T, 911 E and 911 S. The reverse covers both versions of the mid-engined VW-Porsche 914: the four-cylinder 914/4 and six-cylinder 914/6.

Produced for the Swedish market and carrying the name Svenska Volkswagen AB, the sheet documents an interesting period in Porsche’s Swedish distribution history following the earlier Scania-Vabis era. Unlike the more elaborate sales brochures, this publication is primarily technical, presenting detailed comparative specifications together with small line illustrations of the 911 and 914.

The combination of both model families on a single Swedish-language sheet makes it an interesting piece of period dealer literature, particularly for documenting Porsche’s Swedish model programme in 1971.
